Environmental sustainability strategy

  1. Introduction

Nodge Films is an independent film production company based in Norwich, UK. As we grow, we are committed to embedding sustainability into our operations to minimise our environmental impact while maintaining the quality of our creative output. This strategy outlines our commitment to sustainable filmmaking, ensuring that we adopt best practices in line with ALBERT certification principles and stay focused on reducing our environmental footprint across Norwich, Norfolk and everywhere we make films.

  1. Sustainability goals

We have set the following sustainability goals:

  • Embed sustainability from the start – integrate sustainable practices into all productions and decision-making.

  • Minimise carbon emissions in productions – prioritise local locations, reduce travel, and adopt energy-efficient practices.

  • Reduce waste and resource consumption – minimise single-use plastics and implement recycling and reuse strategies.

  • Source responsibly – work with eco-conscious suppliers and prioritise local businesses.

  • Develop a carbon neutrality plan – within three years, establish a roadmap towards carbon neutrality.

  • Engage with local sustainability initiatives – collaborate with environmental organisations, particularly those linked to Norfolk’s Broads National Park and our coastal, fen and marshland areas.

  • Continuous learning and improvement – regularly assess and refine sustainability practices.

  1. Sustainable production practices

To align with ALBERT principles, we will implement the following:

3.1 Energy & office use

  • Operate using a hybrid working model to limit unnecessary travel and energy consumption.

  • Where possible, ensure office spaces use renewable energy suppliers.

3.2 Equipment & resource efficiency

  • Continue renting or borrowing all filming equipment, reducing unnecessary resource consumption.

  • Prioritise sustainable film equipment such as LED lighting and rechargeable batteries.

3.3 Travel & transport

  • Prioritise carpooling for all productions to reduce vehicle emissions.

  • Explore the feasibility of using electric vehicles (EVs) where practical, acknowledging rural limitations in Norfolk.

  • Select filming locations with minimal transport requirements.

3.4 Waste management

  • Maintain a clear disposal plan for set materials, costumes, and production waste.

  • Implement best practices in recycling and reducing waste, avoiding single-use plastics.

  • Encourage cast and crew to bring reusable water bottles and reduce reliance on disposable catering products.

3.5 Local engagement & partnerships

  • Continue prioritising local suppliers for catering, props, and production materials to reduce transportation emissions and support sustainable businesses.

  • Explore collaborations with environmental organisations linked to Broads National Park and other ecologically significant Norfolk locations.

  1. Carbon neutrality roadmap

As part of our long-term commitment, we will develop a structured plan towards carbon neutrality. This will involve:

  • Conducting an initial carbon footprint assessment for our productions.

  • Identifying priority areas for emissions reduction.

  • Exploring carbon offsetting strategies where reductions are not feasible.

  • Partnering with industry initiatives such as ALBERT to ensure compliance with best practices.

  1. Environmental policy for staff & temporary workers

To ensure sustainability is a shared responsibility, we will develop an environmental policy covering:

  • Sustainability expectations for employees, contractors, and temporary workers.

  • Training or guidance on sustainable production practices.

  • Incentives for sustainable behaviour on set.

  1. Monitoring & continuous improvement

We will regularly review our sustainability practices to ensure ongoing improvements, learning from industry innovations and gathering stakeholder feedback to refine our approach.

  1. Summary

Nodge Films is dedicated to responsible filmmaking that prioritises environmental sustainability. By folding sustainable practices into every aspect of our operations, we aim to set a strong foundation for future growth while minimising our ecological footprint.
